How Long Can The Right Remain Magnanimous?

Today marks the sixteenth day since the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Have we seen any riots so far? Any cars torched? Any stores looted? Any Molotov cocktails thrown? Zero as far as I know.

But what if the shoe was on the other foot? What if it were a prominent, liberal black activist assassinated by a so-called right-wing extremist or to use another term the left calls people like Charlie—a white Christian nationalist? If this were the case, imagine the utter devastation that would occur. It would make the aftermath of George Floyd look like a one minute preview.

But instead of mass riots, what did we see following Charlie’s assassination? We saw a stadium filled with people there to honor him. Instead of encouraging violence during George Floyd like Maxine Waters saying: “We’ve got to stay on the street. Ane we’ve got to get more active. We’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business;” or Kamala Harris: “They’re not going to stop. And everyone, beware, because they’re not going to stop…and they should not,” Erika Kirk encouraged her side to respond to Charlie’s death by developing more faith: “Pray again, read the bible again, go to church next Sunday, and the Sunday after that.” Erika Kirk spoke of forgiving the killer. Is she or those at the memorial—the MAGA faction or so-called white Christian nationalist faction—who the left means as being the biggest threat to our country?

As magnanimous as the right has been following Charlie’s death, how much longer can they poke a bear before it finally reacts? We are all only human and only capable of taking so much. Considering the totality of two attempts on Trump, the attempt on Brett Kavanaugh, Charlie Kirk, the racially motivated killing of Iryna Zarutska, multiple transgender related shootings, riots and attacks on ICE including the recent fatality, and all the rhetoric and demonization that led to these, the pendulum will undoubtably swing if this even remotely continues. It’s just a matter of time. This is why many fear a potential second civil war.
